Smart EV chargers in their simplest form are chargers which can be connected to the internet. The main purpose of this connection is to ensure that the device can be updated with firmware, especially as new software and technologies are released into the market, which may need to connect to the device. The charger can be connected so that payments can be processed and other functions carried out.

Ultimately being smart is future-proofing the device so that it doesn’t become defunct years down the line. It also allows the charging to be controlled by your own car’s application or by the chargers App. A smart charger will also show charging times, kWh usage and the charging capacity at any one time.

Why We Recommend a 30kW DC Charger

When considering the installation of an EV charging station, particularly in Ireland, there are several practical reasons for recommending a 30kW DC charger over higher-powered alternatives.

Firstly, electrical infrastructure limitations play a significant role. Many premises in Ireland do not have the necessary power supply to support higher-powered chargers without significant and costly electrical upgrades. A 30kW charger can typically be installed with the existing electrical setup, making it a more practical and cost-effective option for many businesses and homes.

Secondly, vehicle compatibility is an important consideration. Not all electric vehicles can utilize ultra-fast charging rates. Many EVs have onboard chargers that limit the rate at which they can charge, meaning that a higher-powered charger wouldn’t necessarily charge these vehicles any faster. For example, if an EV can only accept up to 50kW, using a 100kW charger provides no additional benefit and incurs unnecessary costs.

Additionally, battery health is better preserved with lower power charging. Charging at very high rates can stress the battery, potentially reducing its lifespan over time. A 30kW charger offers a balanced approach, providing quick enough charging times while being gentler on the battery, thus extending its overall life.

Lastly, grid demand and stability is a concern. High-powered chargers place a substantial load on the electrical grid, which can lead to increased demand charges and potential grid instability. Using a 30kW charger helps mitigate these issues by spreading the load more evenly and avoiding peak demand surcharges.

In summary, a 30kW DC charger offers a pragmatic balance of cost, compatibility, battery health, and grid stability, making it a suitable choice for most locations in Ireland.

Solar Carport at our premises 18kWp System

We have installed a solar system at our premises which incorporates roof mounted solar, ground mounted panels and a solar port to a different orientation. We can analyse how the orientation and angle of panels performance over the different seasons.

We manufactured and installed a solar port to suit the visitor charger location at our premises. We used recycled galvanised steel. Our carport cantilevers are designed so that the supports do not restrict access to the vehicles. 

Commercial Energy Storage Systems

At Conneely Energy, we stock and supply the market leading energy storage systems for commercial situations and larger residential customers.

As the grid will be unable to upgrade electricity supply in the future for customers, they will have to consider energy storage systems to store electricity. Customers will feed in electricity from solar systems and supplement with low rate electricity at night. The energy stored will be used for EV charging and for other energy uses at the premises.

The term used for taking in electricity in small amounts to a storage system is ‘Trickle Feeding’:

This avoids having to upgrade incoming electrical supply to meet increased demand in a business.

Mobile Battery Charging For EVs

Mobile BESS products provide mobile, temporary electricity wherever and whenever it’s needed. By storing low-cost off-peak grid power and dispatching it onsite as needed, mobile storage provides operators with emissions and noise-free electricity – often for days or weeks without having to recharge.  

When compared to typical diesel or petrol generators mobile BESS do not emit harmful fumes and other pollutants, they are much quieter which creates a safer work environment as less noise allows clearer communication between workers onsite.

Replacing fossil fuel powered plant and equipment with cleaner mobile BESS allows the company to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve their climate goals. Mobile BESS products can also charge from local grids powered by renewable energy sources like solar panels.

A solar inverter or photovoltaic (PV) inverter is a type of power inverter which converts the variable direct current (DC) output of a photovoltaic solar panel into a grid frequency alternating current (AC) that can be fed into the main electrical grid or used by a local, off-grid electrical network. Inverters come in different sizes which are based on the size of the solar PV array. Conneely Energy sells commercial and domestic/residential inverters which will be compatible with energy storage systems.

What back-end solution does Conneely Energy use?

All our chargers can be integrated with the Spirii software platform. The chargers underwent extensive testing on the OCPP 1.6 Json platform to ensure that they are compatible.

EV charging on a site can be free, at cost price or charged at any rate the owner of the site wishes.

Ideal for a company that has employees with home chargers, Spirii platform can show usage at any site so staff can be reimbursed if they charge their company vehicles at home.

Spirii users can avail of 24/7 customer support if required and the billing can be provided by the platform partner or by Spirii. It can also show users how much C02 savings have accumulated for each of their charging sites.

SEAI Triple E Register

SEAI Triple E Register

The SEAI Triple E Register is a list of energy efficient products approved by the SEAI. All SEAI grant approved ev chargers must be Triple E Registered and Conneely Energy have registered all their chargers on the Triple E Register. Triple E approved products are also approved for Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA Incentives). According to the SEAI website, the Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) is a tax incentive scheme that promotes investment in energy efficient products & equipment. The ACA is based on the long-standing ‘Wear and Tear Allowance’ for investment in capital plant and machinery, whereby capital depreciation can be compensated through a reduction in an organisation’s tax liability.

The ACA scheme allows a sole trader, farmer or company that pays corporation tax or income tax on trading or professional income in Ireland to deduct the full cost of the equipment from their profits in the year of purchase. As a result, the business’s taxable profits are reduced by the value of qualifying capital expenditure. By contrast, the Wear and Tear Allowance provides for the same tax reduction, but this is spread evenly over an eight-year period.
